Zakat

الزكاة

Zakat is an obligation on eligible wealth, worked out once each lunar year. Learn the terms, work out an estimate with your own numbers, then check where you give.

An estimate, not a personal fatwa. This is not a calculator for every asset class. For your own situation and school of thought, ask a qualified scholar.

The terms, before the numbers

Eight short notes. Each one names the organisation whose published guidance it follows.

  1. What this estimate covers

Zakat is an obligation for eligible wealth, not simply a voluntary donation. This tool estimates monetary wealth at 2.5% on a confirmed lunar zakat anniversary. It does not decide your personal religious obligation. Ask a qualified scholar about your circumstances and school of law.

    Based on

  2. Nisab: the minimum wealth threshold

Choose gold or silver and a weight convention explicitly. NZF documents 87.48g gold / 612.36g silver and the alternative 85g / 595g. Gold and silver thresholds can differ greatly today. NZF favours silver for mixed wealth; Islamic Relief records arguments for both. Entirely gold or entirely silver holdings require their respective threshold under the cited guidance. Do not choose only to minimise an estimate.

    Based on

  3. Your price, currency and observation time

Enter the selected metal’s pure-metal price per gram, currency, named source and observation timestamp. No live feed or stored market default is supplied. Refresh older quotes and use values appropriate to your valuation date. Value your own metal holdings separately, accounting for purity. Convert foreign balances externally using a dated source; this tool does not convert currencies.

  4. Hawl: a full lunar year

Hawl means a lunar year, about 354–355 days, not a Gregorian calendar year. Use your Islamic-date anniversary. The cited Islamic Relief method checks nisab at the beginning and end; intermediate dips need not reset it, while losing all assets does. It also includes new cash held on the anniversary. Other scholarly methods can treat continuity and newly acquired wealth differently. If unsure, choose unsure: the tool withholds an amount instead of guessing. It does not reconstruct past years or calculate a calendar-year rate.

  5. Included assets without double counting

Enter cash and bank balances, gold/silver bullion value, trade inventory at current selling value, and collectible debts under your chosen policy. Personal-use gold/silver jewellery has an explicit include/exclude choice: the Hanafi treatment includes it; other schools can exclude permissible personal worn jewellery subject to conditions. Include trade jewellery as inventory. Do not include the same business cash, metal or loan in two fields. Doubtful debts are excluded provisionally; their recovery and past-year treatment need advice.

    Based on

  6. Liabilities: what you owe

Choose no deduction, eligible principal due now, or eligible principal due now plus later instalments within the next lunar year. Islamic Relief’s FAQ suggests only the current month for large instalment debt; NZF allows forthcoming lunar-year principal under its guidance. These are policy choices, not interchangeable universal rulings. Do not deduct your entire mortgage, interest, future living budgets or the same instalment twice. The due-now and later fields must not overlap.

  7. Not everything is taxed at 2.5%

A personal home, car and household items are excluded under the cited monetary guidance unless held for trade. Agriculture, livestock and other special categories have different rules and are outside this tool. Shares, pensions, crypto, rental property, business structures and restricted assets may need specialist assessment. Enter only a scholar-assessed monetary investment portion, not an invented blanket percentage. Mark unassessed complex assets as needing assessment; no total obligation will be shown.

  8. Check a charity before giving

An organisation saying it accepts zakat is different from independent certification. Charity registration establishes legal identity, not religious eligibility. Read its zakat allocation policy, administration costs, recipient eligibility and any actual certificate. Select the zakat fund yourself on the official site; no donation or broadcast is made here. Directory checks are dated, not permanent endorsements.

Work out an estimate

Monetary wealth on a confirmed lunar zakat anniversary, at 2.5%. Every choice is yours to make; nothing is filled in for you except today's date. Nothing you type leaves this device.

Date and currency

Date and currency

Usually your lunar zakat anniversary.

Use one currency for every amount. No conversion is done.

Nisab

Nisab, the threshold

Zakat is due only when your wealth reaches the nisab. It is measured in gold or silver, and the two can be very different today. Read “Nisab” above before choosing.

Measure the nisab by
Weight convention

Both are documented by the National Zakat Foundation.

Today's price, from you

Taqwa has no verified live price feed, so it never guesses one. Look up the price of one gram of pure the metal you chose in —, then say where and when you saw it.

What you own

What you own

Value everything on the same date. Count each thing once. Your home, car and household items are not entered here. Type 0, or tap None, for anything you don't have.

Cash at home, current and savings accounts.

What it would sell for today, allowing for purity. Not jewellery.

Its value today. Jewellery you sell for a living belongs in stock for sale.

Count jewellery you wear?

Schools of thought differ here.

At today's selling value. Not tools, equipment or premises.

Loans you made where the borrower can and will repay.

Count money owed to you now?

Recorded and left out of the estimate; ask a scholar about it.

Only the zakatable part a qualified person worked out. Enter 0 if none.

What you owe

What you owe

Only eligible principal. Never your whole mortgage, interest, future living costs, or the same instalment twice.

What to deduct
Your lunar year

Your lunar year (hawl)

Hawl is a full Islamic lunar year, about 354 or 355 days. Methods differ on how dips below the nisab during the year count; read “Hawl” above.

Has a full lunar year passed?
Do you also have shares, pensions, crypto, rental property, a business, crops or livestock that no scholar has assessed?

These follow other rules and are outside this estimate.

Where to give

Saying an organisation accepts zakat is not the same as independent certification, and a charity registration confirms who it is, not how it spends zakat. Each card says exactly what was checked, and when. Nothing here is a recommendation, and no payment happens in Taqwa.

How the directory was checked

Every entry was checked on 2026-10-03 against the organisation's own pages and, where shown, a public charity register. Checks are dated, not permanent endorsements.

On the official site, choose the zakat fund yourself. A general or emergency appeal is not automatically a zakat designation.
